One of the most amazing opportunities of living in Colorado is having the Rocky Mountains in our back yard. From November through March the mountains beckon us with their fresh powder and awe-inspiring views. The pull of the mountains is what leads many of us parents to strap skis on kids who are still mastering the finer points of walking. There are so many resorts and each have a unique way of attracting young families. When I am looking for an easy get away, for the day or weekend, one of my favorite family friendly mountains is Winter Park. Although it doesn’t have the glamour of Vail, Aspen or Beaver Creek, Winter Park does offer  a friendly, manageable, resort that understands what makes a day at the mountain great for families.

A few reasons why Winter Park is one of my favorite places to ski with the boys:

Kids under 5 ski free!

There is close in pay parking that is reasonably priced and worth every penny. There are full and half day rates available and parking after 3:00 PM is free. The beauty of parking in the pay parking lot is that you are in a covered parking lot making it easier to get the kids into all their ski clothes. Then all you do is walk out of the lot and there are wagons available to pull your child and all of the skis, helmets goggles etc… to the lift. Click HERE for a map to the pay parking lot.

When you are ready to come in from the cold but wish to stay on the mountain, there are three, unique mountain top lodges all with food, snacks and hot cocoa to satisfy you and your little skiers. The Lodge at Sunspot is a must see magnificent log and stone structure with stunning views. If you are looking for something a little more casual then the Lunch Rock Cafe located 11,200 feet above sea level is for you. The third on mountain dining experience is a true blast to the past. Colorful and lively Sunspot overlooks the Dark Territory Terrain Park where you can sit on the deck enjoy a drink and watch the

Although I have not skated here, the sweet little outdoor ice rink located in the heart of the village just beckons me to lace up my skates and twirl around the rink. It’s on my must do list for this winter.

Their top notch ski school offers youth group & private lessons by top rated instructors as well as child care for those still too young to ski.  Winter Park is also the home to more of the best adaptive ski programs  in the country.

Whether you are a front range local or a family  on vacation Winter Park resort will offer you that Colorado Mountain Experience you have been craving.
